I tried the recipe (can't remember the name but I think it's the first one in the book) with the roast potatoes, cheeses and spring onions for dinner last night. We both thought it was pretty awful. How Delia can say that everyone likes Aunt Bessies Roast Potatoes I have no idea. They are so incredibly dry and tasteless. I threw some top quality dry cure smoky bacon in, cut up into strips and we had fried eggs on top but it didn't help much. Just in case you think I only come on here to slag off Delia's recipes, I thought the Garlic Prawns were yummy as was the Pomboli and my partner loved the Black Forest Ham Soup.
I have made this dish, using my own roast potatoes, I also find the aunt bessie ready made ones dry, however, saying that, Tesco do a nice variety, in their finest frozen range, they are king edwards.
I used to use Sainsbrys King Edward frozen roasts Sam in the UK and they were fine. Aunt Bessie does not do it for me either. I like this dish with my own saute potatoes too. Viv xx
I wouldn't dream of buying ready made roasties normally - only bought them to try this recipe.
Not had the roasts - but I have become very partial to the frozen mash - which I surprise myself really!. Is very high quality - unlike so many of the others which are made of powder. These are really potatoes - with no funny business added in. I really would never have given them a second look and now.... I always have a bag in the freezer and my mum has found them a god send. So great when you live on your own and you only want a few discs at a time. She has said it has stopped her endlessly throwing out sprouting potatoes!! She feels she is doing her bit for less waste. But of course they have to taste good - and they do.
I have to agree also with toady.....The frozen mash is a revelation.....i have always got a packet in the freezer now, its marvellous, and you can jazz it up if you fancy with bits of spring onion and cabbage, or adding grated cheese or mustards, its so delicious, and so handy, shame its a little bit expensive, but a dead handy stand by, for those late night munchies.
but saying that i have started making extra mash when i do cottage pies, so i have some of my own in storage.

The mash is brill, but Aunt Bessies roasties and their yorkshires are totally revolting............

I agree - I'd never even heard of frozen mash before - but it's fantastic! - gave it to partner and son last week - they said it was yummy! - It slipped my mind to tell them it was frozen - as I stood there and took their compliments!
Must buy some more!
Go for it Sheelagh!!! Our boys simply do not need to know these things...........

James - you always make me smile!
I'm still freezing my own mash, habit of a lifetime, but for roast potatoes McCain's are streets ahead of Aunt Bessies, can't think Delia didn't try them when she was doing her research!
I have also discovered frozen mash through Delia and the one we have here in France is great! As far as the first recipe in the book I made it with my normal potatoes and it was great (we don't have Aunt Bessie's). The McCaan potatoes we have here are great too. I had never used them but as we don't have Aunt Bessie's I decided to try and they are really good!
