Does anyone know whether spring bulbs can grow through cedar mulch? I have a bed that is primarily reserved for roses and is proving a real pain in terms of weeds. Mulch would seem to be a great solution, except that I also have lots of daffodills and tulips in there each Spring. Will they still come up if I put the mulch down?

Jampling, not sure about cedar bark but my bulbs come up every year and I put manure and rotted shreddings on the beds-they don't seem to have any trouble getting through that lot.
If you're not sure, just put some on a small area to test.

Don't know if this is any help. The chap mentions that cedar mulch is different and "locks together" which makes it a good weed suppressent (sp). Biggs

Spring bulbs come up through a lawn, which has quite a network of grass roots and stuff to keep them down, but they manage to get their pointy little tops up through that ... I wouldn't think your mulch will stop them, unless it's more than a couple of inches thick.

That all makes perfect sense. I knew I could rely on you lot!

Many thanks. I'll be off to get my lovely and 'aromatic' cedar mulch tomorrow before the bed I've just weeded manages to re-seed itself again!
