My slow starters are a lot happier now there's been some sun, the small one is about 3ft, and the big one I have just measured at seventy-two inches which is six foot! It has a flower about to open, three more at the top and another bud down the stem. I've lost the seed packet so can't remember the name, but they are the dark red flowers with black centres. Anyone else still got them?
Chuffed Bramble xxx
Bramble,
I bet you are chuffed, so would I be.....enjoy your sunflowers.....could they possibly produce some sunshine for us........although not that bad here today, quite sunny but a cloudy sky......

Amazing, Bramble. All I have is dwarf sunflowers, so you can feel very superior.
This is in no way connected, but we recently bought a lovely limited edition print called "sunflowers". Was delivered yesterday. Its lovely!

Right Bramble, you need Marc to come and photograph your sunflowers so you can all benefit from the sale of the prints - hurry up Marc! I'm sure Bramble will feed you both James (you will, won't you Bramble - even if it's only mashed potatoes for James, with a litle fillet steak on the side?)
Well done Bramble. I got NONE growing :0(
OH suggested we take a photo of the fields of sunflowers growing, but they are only 4 foot and their lovely faces are turned away from the road.
Hope to do better next year and actually have some growing in our garden. Very disappointed Biggs
It looks like you`ve got the trophy, Bramble. My tallest is about 5 foot, with straggly well munched leaves, and tiny heads waiting to bloom. There were too many in the pot, and I neglected them for a while, so they are letting me know!
We`ve had little or no sun for a couple of weeks, so it might take a couple more weeks for the others (4 in all) to look like anything.
You told us the name of them on the original post, can`t remember either. Bet they`re a picture!
crumbs :-)

I've just bought some seeds, they're a F1 hybrid called Moulin Rouge, and they're a lovely velvety wine-red flower with black centre, just a hint of gold around the seeds. Supposed to get up to 6ft so we shall see! Everybody remember to remind us to measure them in August-September !
Bramble:-)))

Oh thank you Dolly! Well spotted :-)
I was sure Biggs would walk off with this one, living in sunflower country as she does, and Crumbs got off to a good start too, still, we didn't have money on it :-)
I don't mind feeding James, Liz, he eats like a bird -
he can have sunflower seeds ha ha !!
James, is that one of Van Gogh's sunflowers? He was obsessed with them, painted loads, they're all wonderful, they absolutely GLOW! You have good taste (of course!)
Bramble xxx
No Bramble, although I do love Van Gogh. I will find a pic of it online to show you, we are really pleased with it.

Bramble- see there's an advantage to having slow-starters- mine went to seed ages ago and now look really sad! (will keep them up tho' for the birds) :-)
I thought (hoped) I was going to 'walk' this one too, Bramble. Having grown 8 footers in Colchester :0)
Just never know what's going to get thrown at one, do we. Mind you OH planting the first lot of seeds in pure fertilizer didn't help, lost all our first batches of seedlings. Can't find any reason why the 2nd batch came to nowt !
I've got some lovely borage, late sown, just about to come into flower but they're barely 8 inches high. Used to grow to a hight of 18 inches in Colchester :0(
Hopefully I will be able to console myself with a Pimms, beautifully decorated, in a few days. Biggs
I'm going to take a picture of my poor lonely sunflower,
and tell it kindly how it won the grand national because all the other sunflowers fell over their fences ...
