Just want to say how much I have enjoyed growing and eating my own veg this year. I had never grown vegetables before this year but am amazed how easy it is. Also how great when i need vegetables for dinner to just walk to the end of the garden and pick. The taste of them is just awesome
Already planning next years and digging out an even bigger plot
Anyway just wanted to tell you how much I am enjoying myself!
Help! I'm a novice veg gardener and need some advice. I have just dug up my carrots and they are twisted and curled. Other than that they looked fresh, orange and smell like they should. I think my soil is sandy loam. Any suggestions? witty vic
My slow starters are a lot happier now there's been some sun, the small one is about 3ft, and the big one I have just measured at seventy-two inches which is six foot! It has a flower about to open, three more at the top and another bud down the stem. I've lost the seed packet so can't remember the name, but they are the dark red flowers with black centres. Anyone else still got them?

It was a false alarm, the buds were yet more leaves

Not got a garden yet but i can dream!
Well, my LOH dug our potatoes up that we'd grown in an old dustbin and I have to say, I don't think they were worth the effort. Taste wasn't as good as the Charlottes I buy in Waitrose nor did we get that many. Quite disappointing.
Think I'll stick to growing flowers from now on...

HI everyone i've just been reading about your pepper plants and was wondering do you get the seeds out of the pepper and use these to grow the plants? and would i be able to grow them now or is it too late ?
i'm very new at this but am willing to try .
This is the first summer that I've had a small veggie patch. So far, I've done sugar snap peas, courgettes, toms and baby sweetcorn but these will end soon and I'm wondering what I can grow over winter. So far, I've thought of garlic and pak choi - does anyone have any other suggestions espically as I have a small area - Thank you!
I am unhappy to report I have been absent for a long time. Can anyone tell me if the De Lia Code ever progressed beyond chapter 22?
Thanks, Gourmet Girl.
... Cauliflower! Never grown them before as I don't like them much, but we had one tonight, just the size of a cricket ball, and what a lovely taste :-)))

Does anyone know whether spring bulbs can grow through cedar mulch? I have a bed that is primarily reserved for roses and is proving a real pain in terms of weeds. Mulch would seem to be a great solution, except that I also have lots of daffodills and tulips in there each Spring. Will they still come up if I put the mulch down?
hi sandrak- i saw your answer to biggles vine thread and wanted to ask you about the seaweed thingy- do you spray it to stop the mould? (+what sort of dilution?)
many thanks.
my 3 pepper plants look really good and healthy
about 18 inches tall and bushy, they have been outside for about 3-4 weeks, BUT, still no flowers.

The vines are ripening well despite them beiong pruned late too.
How are your new vines coming along V Viv?
....despite being so late in getting the first veggie plot dug and the first tatties planted mid May; I've just dug up the first 6 plants and have a veritable haul. Just drying off in the late sunshine and then we will weigh them and cook a few for supper. Only another 144 plants to dig up from this crop. These are Stempters which didn't flower and we planted the Charlottes a little later and 6 weeks ago we planted the Nicola (which should have been the first in) which are now flowering.
Picked our first tomato 2 days ago and have had 3 mini cucumbers. Runner beans also went in late and have just started to produce little beans. Biggs

We begin Life as a miracle
And slowly forget That we still are.
My Husqvarna Viking sewing machine of some 38 years literally blew up! Black smoke belched out and it has been consigned to the dump! I wondered if anyone has a relatively modern machine and which one they would recommend? I have been looking up various makes etc. but there are SO many to choose from. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks.

read your comment with interest about 'flame throwers' (my words, not yours) for weeding. Went out and bought one yesterday; OH and I have spent 3 happy hours enjoying the weeding. I noted your point about not destroying the top of the weed, just damaging it. Have you any more tips you can help me out with the use of this extremely useful tool? Thanks. Biggs
As it was in such a sad and sorry state I remembered what my friend did with one of her house plants, she cut the whole thing back to a 2 inch stump and it started to grow again.
I have done this too. If it works, bonus. If it doesn't it's a shame but plant wouldn't have lasted anyway.
