Freezing egg whites  (4 Replies)
Saturday 19 July 16:52

I read on here somewhere this morning someone mentioned freezing egg whites. In what state do you freeze them and if it's just as they are, does this not affect their whiskability (Is that a word?)

freezer recipes.  (6 Replies)
Saturday 19 July 12:25

Anyone got good make ahead and freeze recipes? My husband works abroad and I want to prepare meals for him when I go out to visit. Is it safe to freeze cooked rice? I am a little constrained by ingredients as a lot of things are not available and the meat is not great quality. Fish and chicken are plentiful, veg and fruit is excellent and organic. Would love to hear your thoughts!

Lasagne  (8 Replies)
Saturday 19 July 08:27

I haven't got much experience when it comes to making lasagne mainly because I can't use tomatoes, tinned or otherwise. However, if I used a different sauce for the meat or veg, what are the best lasagne sheets for assembling the dish earlier in the day and cooking in the evening? I tried making it recently pre-cooking the sheets but they were sticky and tore easily. Also, how many would you use for four people and should they overlap?

Alternatives to milk  (6 Replies)
Friday 18 July 15:20

Following on from my introductions on the "coffee break" board (and the kind replies) - can anymore suggest a dairy free alternative to milk? I have already tried the two Alpro varieties both from the chiller and the UHT sections of the supermarket - they were either too sweet or too sharp.
Thank you

Friday 18 July 11:38

Thank you all for your suggestions and yes Nanny ogg we did have those bins at the end of the street. Nothing that could possibly be used in some way was ever wasted was it. When I think back I am amazed at the meals my mother was able to produce out of hardly any ingredients and we were really healthy too.I remember as a schoolgirl being sent to the Butchers to collect the ration of Corned Beef for the week and nibbling it on the way home until there was hardly any left!!! Still love it to this day!!!!

A starter set of pans  (12 Replies)
Friday 18 July 00:00

I'm looking to buy a good robust set of basic pans but in truth have no idea what I should really be looking for.

While the SKK option seems very good they are out of my price range, at the same time I do not want to end up buying rubbish.

Can anyone offer some suggestions suitable for the more budget concious buyer?

Broad Beans in my Organic Box this week and am just preparing them to cook. Wondering if the outer pod could be used to make soup ? During the war I remember we used to make Pea Shuck Soup which was very good so would the same thing apply do you think. We did not waste anything at all in those days so maybe we should all go back to it.......
