Did anybody see the Farming programme on BBC2 this evening - they were advocating mutton and getting people to try it. Everyone who did was very surprised how lovely it was. Seem's like we're ahead of the game again!

Yes, SS, I saw it. Strange how so many folks thought it would be tough or stringy. When I was a child I recall my mother making the most delicious mutton stew and it was melt-in-the-mouth tender. So why don't I ever make it? x x

Prince Charles really has been very good at promoting mutton....but it's still difficult to get hold of.
I have no idea what the chances are of getting mutton here, no doubt I'll find out one day (must practice and improve my French). LOL Biggs

It's probably a bit easier to get hold of the meat that Prince Charles spent some time promoting - older than lamb but not as old as mutton. Whatever is it called...........it's on the tip of my tongue........

Yes, we have bought that in Yorkshire, Essex Girl, I think it's a year older than lamb, but we had to buy half a beast from the butcher, he didn't retail it in the shop. Made lovely curry, but we weren't keen enough to buy another when we can get local lamb so easily round here.

Mutton is difficult to get hold of these days. When I was a youngster we had wonderful mutton stews and a slow roast mutton was wonderful. I think it's far tastier than lamb.

Oh Saffy, that made me laugh out loud! Have to admit, though, I do quite like Camilla.

Strangely, I have never seen mutton on sale in our local farm shop although I have asked for it. A friend of mine makes the most wonderful curry dish but she gets hers from Smithfield meat market in London.

Biggs it's not very easy to get here either. It's called 'mouton' as opposed to 'agneau' for lamb and I asked about it from my excellent butcher in Niort market. He said people didn't ask for it. Maybe we can change that!!!!
