What we used to get were midget gherkins bottled in malt vinegar that seared your throat, but now, thankfully, we get the real thing, crunchy and fragrant. They are another must in the store cupboard, not just for eating with pâtés or served with drinks, but as an important ingredient in tartare sauce and fish recipes.
