This keeps appearing in the cheat book.
And I have to say, it doesn't feel much like cheating to me.
I understand that Delia says ground nutmeg isn't the same, so does anyone know where you can buy ready grated nutmeg?
I mean honestly, Delia even says buy grated cheese to save time, but I think I could probably grate a block of cheese faster than half a nutmeg! What's going on?
Should I just use ground nutmeg? If so, how many teaspoons are equivalent to one whole grated nutmeg?
Assume you are not taking the michael ! Of course you are.
It takes three seconds to grate a little nutmeg into a dish......
You can buy nutmeg pieces in a grinder, or even a nutmeg grinder which takes whole nutmeg.
had trouble finding whole nutmeg here so have resorted to the pre-ground stuff. Find i need a bit more as it loses it's whallop after a bit.
Now have found whole nutmeg but will take about a year to get through the jar of pre-ground stuff first!
i think one teaspoon is about one nutmeg....
I've never grated an entire nutmeg before, I usually use whatever I find on the shelf first - either a whole nutmeg or the ground stuff. Prefer to grate from a whole nutmeg, it's more aromatic.
mmm...love the smell of freshly ground nutmeg...cant beat it!!!
Works wonders in a cheese sauce!
And on the top of rice pudding or a custard tart!
Ground nutmeg is nothing like freshly grated! they are not in the same league!
Classix, I rather enjoy grating nutmeg. I use a micrplane becasue the punched graters are rubbish and clog up so easily. I find that it's much easier than grating cheese which slips around and can leave you fingers exposed.
So I keep my nutmeg grater in the gadget drawer with a nutmeg stored in it - because I think the little grater looks kind of sweet - but when it comes to grating I get out the microplane!!
Ground nutmeg is like sawdust in a jar, no where near the same as fresh grated - which takes about two seconds!
Sorry Classix but I agree with the others, ready-ground has all the appeal of house dust. Putting it through the cheese-grater of your food processor would be the way to do it, you only need wipe the bowl out with a tea-towel afterwards :-)))
Ok OK...LOL
You have convinced me. Grated nutmeg is the way to go.
I have found a solution, and also have one more question...
The solution...Tell your other half, "If you want me to cook this entire dinner while you watch TV, then you best grate half of this nutmeg while you're watching it!" hee hee (yep, it works...just give them a saucer, the nutmeg and the mini grater from the jar).
My Question though is about using the food grater from the food processor.
I couldn't find the Kenwood mini-processor, so bought a different mini processor that also came with a slicer and grater.
The grater attachment isn't fine though (like the one in the jar). Will it still work if I grate the nugmeg through it, or will it blunt the blades?
Cheers.
