i made the goulash on friday. i was a bit disappointed really, it was a bit bland. my m-in-law didn't really eat much of hers.
has anyone else found this? if i make it again i'm going to be tempted to ramp up the amount of paprika (sweet and hot) quite considerably!
Hi Samcat - I made the goulash a couple of weeks ago. Whilst we didn't find it bland, I wasn't too keen on the smoked flavour of the paprika. I think I will just use ordinary paprika next time. We definitely prefer the cincinnati chilli and the boeuf bourguinon.
Hi Sam
I agree with you I think the goulash is quite bland. I added much more paprika than was in the recipe to suit our tastes
xx
I always think its tricky with spices - you have to judge for yourself really don't you. If I'm cooking for adults I always hike up the spice and lower for the kids. They loved the chocolate cake (the one with the mash) for instance but I did really reduce the chinese five spice powder to make sure as I knew they would go er!!!! otherwise. I often find that's the case with chilli too - some always hotter than others - so have loved the piri piri chillies for the food cupboard. I had never used them before and have got them on ready stand by now.
I have only made the 'original' goulash, not the how to cheat one, but didn't find it bland at all. (Loved the smoked paprika) What a pity...never mind - you kow what you have to do next time
I haven't seen this recipe (haven't got the book) but I make Goulash with smoked paprika which I just love, its really strongly smoky so a little goes a long way but its gorgeous flavour
Pity your M-in-law was there Sam, we do like things spot on when M-in-l's are about, however nice they are :-)))
it certainly was bramble but i don't know whether it was the food she wasn't happy with or the company!!!
