Tried the Spag Bol for tea. It was OK but it still had that taste of something that's come out of a tin. I don't mean I never use tinned stuff - I use tinned tomatoes all the time for example. But with something like minced beef, as soon as it goes into a tin, other things have to be added such as thingydextrose or whatever it is and even if it's M&S, the flavour is impaired. I now have a taste in my mouth which I wouldn't have if I'd made it from scratch.
I have to say D.S. Tinned mince does not appeal to me either to be honest. Am totally happy with the frozen mash though! Been using it for years!
My own shepherds pie cheat is to make two when we are eating one, and bung one into the freezer. You can oven it straight from frozen. Sometimes I just freeze the mince and that can be heated in a pan and served with pasta instead.
Whilst I enjoy the book very much and support its aim, I have a few little cheats up my sleeve of my own..... I'm never without ameal in the freezer that I've made myself that can be cooked right from frozen.

It would be impossible to hide the second Shepherd's Pie while it was cooling in our house. Sometimes it's as if a plague of locusts has been through our kitchen!!
ha ha ha ha!!!!!!! At least they appreciate your cooking then!
