Daffodils and Tulips, now they have stopped flowering. I usually tie them up until they go yellow but they look so straggly this year I have pulled most leaves up without even tying them. Do you think they will benefit or will it be detrimental to next years blooms?
Yummy
Let them lie till I can just pull them off . Can't be faffed to tie them .Told it is best to leave them as the nutrients go into the soil for next years blooms . Susan xx
Grandad used to bunch the leaves then fold over then tie little bunches.
I can't be faffed with all that, so I chop them down after leaving them petal less for 2 weeks, then i cut them 2 inches above the soil, to then die back down.
Hasn;t done mine any harm at all, in fact this year they were the best i have ever seen.

It is not good to tie them up or cut them while they are green, let them start to turn yellow and then you can cut them back, by that time the goodness from the leaves and the sunlight will have gone back into the bulb : )
I'm turning the garden over for veg by that time, and they get buried to rot away nicely out of sight :-)
We watched Alan Titchmarch do this earlier this week, and he dead headed the daffys, and left the tulips. He applied a very dilute dressing of fertilizer to the surrounding area and left them for a couple of weeks, then removed them to dry out and store for next season. He said never use elastic bands to tie them up.
:-)
