I read with interest that todays ROTD is chicken catch a tory, as its using up plenty of ripe red tom's perfect for this time of the year.....well....................

after my inital disaster and the loss of many plants, I have now have an abundant of tomoatoes, predominately marmite ones (ok they aren't really called marmite, but they are huge beef ones), and many cherries variety.

I have been able to have a small bowl full vine ripened tom's others have been snipped and left on window sill to ripen.

But my main supply are so very very very green, and i can't pick them all and have on my window sills, i haven't got that many windows!!!!! so please tell me i am not the only person suffering from under ripe tom's....I am in desperate need of the sun, to shine to assist the ripening process, before the frost comes and ruins my crops. (in greenhouse and outside).

Hi Sam
That is so annoying when you go to all that trouble and then end up with them all around the house waiting for them to turn!
I have always had mine in pots around the outside of the conservatory facing South and other years they have been lovely turning red and ripe and smelling delicious. Well nearly all of them.This year though they are so disappointing I shall make green tomato chutney which is really tasty and very easy.
So I don't feel that I have lost too much.

You can put them in brown paper bags and place in a drawer; don't forget to check on them regularly. Place with a banana tha will help ripen tommies too.

We have been hit with the blight here and are not likely to get any more tommies this year.

You aren`t the only one, Sam, as you can see. We only grew yellow tumblers this year, and although covered with tomatoes, they are mostly green. I`ve picked about 4 a day for the last week, and they are very sweet, but not enough to fill the holes in my teeth.

We brought on 5 large plants from seed and they are hopeless - large, healthy looking, but very few flowers on them, never mind tomatoes!

My crop has been dismal Sam but I think it's because I planted them too close together. So far I've only had two 'marmite' toms which I roasted because they were rather dry and disappointing. The yellow cherrys I eat while picking beans - all the rest are green or eaten by slugs.
