Went into my Greenhouse today to water my Peppers. Now have one red and two green ones. Boy, did I jump and so did he/she - there was a Cricket on one of the wooden shelves. It's years and years since I've seen one; had completely forgotten they existed. Has anyone else seen them recently? Dottie Mayx

Hi Dottie May
My cat was playing with one in my kitchen I had to catch it and put it back in the garden before she ate it. It was bright green.

Hi Sue. This one was brownish. Should I try and find it again and if so, put it out in the garden or leave it in an unheated greenhouse over the Winter? Think it may be a difficult to catch! Dottie Mayx

We had some in Colchester, Dottie May. Didn't have a greenhouse, just an untidy garden. Didn't see much of them in the winter. Perhaps it's looking for somewhere to hunker down for the winter :0)

They are everywhere down my neck of the woods, particularly along the river edge on my "long dog walk" walk. But there often the distinctive sounds in my back garden too.

We get stag beetles - which i hate - they really scar me....remind me of ancient egyptian times.

zillions of dragon flies...

what i haven;t seen this year - yet, is daddy long legs, maybe my woof has killed all the eggs (with her wee) that would normally be hatching under the grass over a summer..

And also BIG spiders haven;t really come indoors yet, but down here we are sort of having a mini heatwave....not the sort that you can get a tan in, but your washing gets dry in an hour, and the weeds are thriving!

ooo and loads of butterflies too....most peculiar - its a bit late for them to be about.

and this is a really weird thing, I had to go to hospital today, and in the car park there is lots of "islands" with trees in the middle and grass around the base (like a mini round a bout) and there was lilac crocus's!!!!!

Sammy

ps, I have stopped watering my toms and peppers to aid ripening, cos i am willing them to ripen before the first frost comes and ruins them!

I believe the crocus you saw are called Autumn Crocus - they don't have any leaves! Haven't seen any Dragon Flies though and like you the house spiders haven't appeared yet. I hate those. A day or so ago I picked a lovely red pepper and have 3 other green ones growing. Although we've had gorgeous weather this week, I don't think they will grow much bigger. Dottie Mayx

Colchicum autumnale is the full name of the autumn flowering crocus Sam... they also come in white, pinks and creams. A lovely plant.
