Not Sure Where to Post This  (5 Replies)

Went into my Greenhouse today to water my Peppers. Now have one red and two green ones. Boy, did I jump and so did he/she - there was a Cricket on one of the wooden shelves. It's years and years since I've seen one; had completely forgotten they existed. Has anyone else seen them recently? Dottie Mayx

fao Yummy - Oct cook along  (2 Replies)
Friday 03 October 20:36

Bought 2.15 kilos of paleron (a braiser) in Auchan today, it has been cut into 2 pieces so I'm going to try this on the October cookalong. It was on offer and cost 12.70 euros. Not too bad I thought. They also had some lovely looking shin beef but I don't have too much freezer space free at the moment. Biggs

40 years ago this week !!  (10 Replies)

40 years ago this very week ,
Tel , & I became man & wife,
The years sure have gone by so fast,
But we are still in each others lives.
There's been days when I've wanted to kill him ,
And others when he's filled me with pride,
Days when I wanted him out of my sight ,
Yet others, I needed him by my side.
He soon realised that I'm always right ,
It's the same with me day in , & day out,
He is quiet , a very deep thinker,
His motto , A whisper conveys more than a shout.!!
I like very much the sound of my voice,
Can talk from morning till night ,
I'm sure poor old Tel can still hear my voice,
Even when I am long out of sight.
He has stood by my side , solid as a rock ,
Have to say he is a real treasure,
He has dried my tears , & stood by my side,
The few times life gave me short measure.
Together we will stay for the rest of our lives,
Walking into the sunset hand in hand,
As I look back , & reflect on time passed ,
The last 40 years have been grand!!

ripening tomatoes  (3 Replies)

I have got loads of tomatoes on my plants which are still green due to the weather not being hot enough to ripen them. Can I ripen them indoors? Don't want them to go to waste

... there are a couple of peppers on two of my plants, but the newer younger leaves have all got loads of tiny holes in them, they look quite pretty like lace, I am loath to use a pesticide spray on them, because of pollenation.
what would you do?

tidying up the garden for winter  (6 Replies)
Tuesday 09 September 09:35

This is the first year that I have grown vegetables in my back garden. I was wondering what i should be doing to get it ready for winter. I have courgette and squash plants going bananas, Runner beans which are still producing and also tomato plants that have fruit on them
When they have finished what should I do with them? Will they grow back next year or will I have to start again?
What can I put in the ground at this time of year to grow?
Sorry for all the questions but i am a complete novice at this but its something that I have enjoyed doing and intend to dig a bigger plot for next year.
thanks Jools

Someone has stolen my squash  (4 Replies)
Tuesday 09 September 09:31

I am so cross. This is the first year that I have grown veg in my back yard. I noticed when i got back from Holiday that I had a lovely butternut squash growing on my plant. I checked it on the weekend and it was almost ready to pick. Went out to pick it this morning and it has gone. Someone has come into my garden and taken it. I am really upset and angry that someone would do this to me.

September cook along  (1 Reply)
Friday 05 September 18:36

Hi cooked this tonight. It was really nice. I cut the fat off and the meat itself was really tender. I had plenty of sauce left -it wasn't dry or crunchy at all. I did use a small sauce pan so not sure it that was why there was lots of sauce left
I would definately make this again although I would not use belly pork as thought it was quite fatty

September Cook along  (2 Replies)
Friday 05 September 10:01

Hi All
Just thought I'd let you know that I tried the cook along pork receipe last night and I have to say i really didn't like it. I followed the intructions to the letter and didn't use any alternative ingredients. The coating on the pork was quite nice but that was it. the pork it self was far too fatty and after three peices made me feel sick, the veggies were too raw after cooking them slightly longer than suggested and they had no flavour and everything was really dry. Sorry to say, I'm not a fan, which is a shame as I was so looking forward making something new after my little set back of late. OH and I both chucked it in the bin. Had to make him a tin of soup! Has anyone else tried it and liked it?

Growing Garlic  (3 Replies)
Friday 05 September 09:21

I understand home grown garlic is fabulous for flavour and easy to grow.

Is it just a matter of planting cloves in the soil in October? I am going to get a large planter from the garden centre and put it in my parents garden.

Do I just use normal garlic cloves from the supermarket or need I go to a garden centre? Any advice appreciated as I;ve never grown anything before!

September Cook-a-Long (Hung Shao Pork)  (7 Replies)
Monday 01 September 10:21

Well I got all of the ingredients in for the Hung Shao Pork – I made a couple of substitutions because of what I already had in my cupboards – and I forgot the leek…I don’t think it made much difference to the stir fried veg.

The changes I made were that I used regular sugar instead of caster sugar with the pork – it’s only a teaspoon and I must have run out of caster sugar recently and not replaced it so regular sugar was the only way forward!

I also used regular soy sauce (the cheat soy sauce that Delia uses in HTC) instead of Dark Soy sauce.

Veg oil was used too instead of groundnut oil…

So only a few minor changes and I was trying to be sensible with not having to buy too many new products because I didn’t want the cost of this meal shooting through the roof – especially as it’s designed to turn a cheaper cut of meat into ‘something exotic’.

I’ve got to say that I was sorely disappointed with the results. I followed the recipe to the letter and the dish smelt amazing whilst I was cooking it. It was bubbling away nicely and the pork was really turning a wonderful colour – lots of caramalised gooeyness in the pan as it cooked. HOWEVER by the time the pork was served it had gone crunchy! Not burnt as such just rock solid!!! Not the best. In fact I served it to a friend who politely crunched his way through the first few pieces and then we both gave up because it was actually quite embarrassing it was that noisy!!!

The stir fried veg was nice– actually I think I let the cabbage catch a little on the pan and it improved the flavour (slightly charred cabbage is a good flavour for me!)..

Where did I go wrong??? I can’t imagine the pork is supposed to be crunchy.

Gardener's Delight Tomatoes  (1 Reply)
Monday 01 September 09:15

This year I picked up one of last year's old, frosted, dried tomatoes from the floor of the greenhouse, squashed it and spread the seeds in a plant pot. After covering with a thin layer of soil - watering and covering with an old plastic bag - I did not really hold out too much hope. I have just had the best crop of tomatoes ever and it looks as if they will keep going until mid-December. :-)

Saturday 30 August 17:55

I have just got my new greenhouse 8 x 4'6 not very wide due to space available.
I spent weeks looking and trying to justify the expense but just had to have and thought go for it whilst I'm still working as over the last two years I have really got into growing some veg, toms etc and also bringing seeds on
Anyway found this place that manufactures a very well known make just a couple of miles from where I work! so I went along and had a look, they were so helpful and gave me a few freebies, I also got some Portugese pine staging with three shelves which were £48 in the brochure, but had two in the sale for £10 !!.
They delivered at 8.00 am on Bank holiday Monday, built it and it was all up and ready for 9.45am. So you can guess what I have been up to on my weeks holiday. Planted more herb seeds, taken loads of lavender and fushia cuttings. Ohh I'm so chuffed! hope I haven't bored you all . Have to say that my toms outside against a wall have not gone red yet, courgetts have some buds, peppers seem ok, lettuce & other salad stuff ok, strawbs still green and peas got eaten by my grehound !, so not a very good time this year.

Cook Along -September
Thursday 28 August 12:56

Hi All, Looks like the chosen recipe for September by a narrow margin will be Hung Shao Pork. Perhaps we can do the Beef in Barolo next ??
For anyone wanting to join in the recipe can be obtained by typing in Hung Shao Pork in the Search Box under Delia's photo.
