Thank you all for your suggestions and yes Nanny ogg we did have those bins at the end of the street. Nothing that could possibly be used in some way was ever wasted was it. When I think back I am amazed at the meals my mother was able to produce out of hardly any ingredients and we were really healthy too.I remember as a schoolgirl being sent to the Butchers to collect the ration of Corned Beef for the week and nibbling it on the way home until there was hardly any left!!! Still love it to this day!!!!
I too had to go to the butchers every saturday morning and queue up for ages ( all the time worrying that I was going to miss the saturday morning pictures ) can still remember what I had to say to the butcher half a leg of lamb, knuckle end on 3 books please and then to the grocers for our ration of cheese for the week,which was the size of a small box of matches. Then off to the pictures to see Rin Tin Tin and Hopalong Cassidy.
