What do you all use to make a cottage pie in? I dont have any casserole dishes deep enough but wonder if anyone has ever used a loaf tin? I want to be able to freeze it as well - so do I line the tine with foil or somesuch so that I can get the pie out once its frozen?
I usually do the ultimate cheat and buy my cottage pie from m and s but feel I really ought to make my own now I'm retired!

I make them in individual crockery serving dishes because it is one of the things that I can always have single portions available for because my husband is happy to eat it at any time. Probably doesn't help you much but the following tip will: If you haven't made it yourself before and don't have a favourite recipe then the first one which you should try is Delia's Special Cottage Pie. Tried it when a I was a novice cook and have been making it ever since. OH wouldn't eat any other.

Good luck,

Lin (and Jameseybaby) thanks for the tips. Lin, where can I find Delias recipe? Its not on the site (as far as I can tell) but is it in one of her books? The idea of making individual pies is a good one - why didnt I think of that!!

Hi Gillian,
At certain shops, like Wilkinson's if you have one near you, they sell those plastic trays with lids they sell at chinese takeaways. Failing that you can always collect them by ordering lots of takeaways! I usually make a batch of about 5 to freeze, and they freeze beautifully.

I'm not sure what Delia's recipe is, I know it's in her Complete Cookery Course though. Failing that, I'd be very happy to provide you with my own recipe that I've been using for years :)

Hi Gillian,

Yes, it is from her Complete Cookery Course. You are correct, to my surprise it is not on this site but if you google it you may find it. Otherwise, if you let me have your e-mail address I'll type it up for you.

I have various "pyrex" dishes that i use and make individual portions in, my fav individual dishes are only about an inch in depth.

when i make a big one, I use my largest "pyrex" you can get a set of 3 casserole dishes from most stores, like asda/tesco/woolworths. Or i use the lid of my chicken roaster.

Lin/Silly Sausage, I have just found Delias recipe via Google - thanks for the offers I certainly never thought of putting cinnamon in but I'll give it a go! Bought a couple of Le Creuset pottery dishes today and have also heard that you can use loaf tins with the liners from Lakeland to make freezing easy! Watch this space! Gillian
