Can anyone tell me how much is "5 pieces preserved stem ginger"? I live in Canada (lived in York for a year) and love the Preserved Ginger Cake. I can't get stem ginger in Canada and am making my own from scratch. BUT once I get that done, I don't know how much to put in the recipe. Many thanks to anyone who can tell me that. Cheers,
Pat, in my jar of stem ginger in syrup the pieces are sort of oval shaped and measure roughly 1½" across by 2¾" deep.
PS When I put them in Delia's old fashioned cherry cake (without the cherries) I chopped up 5 or 6 pieces of the ginger.
once chopped toss them in flour to make sure they don't sink in the cake!
Pat, I buy "Daltons" preserved ginger in Canada, it's made by "Reinhart Foods" of Toronto and Montreal.
In the old fashioned cherry cake of Delia's they're tossed in the ground almonds.
Pat I would love to know how you make your own from scratch. I adore ginger and alas like you cannot get stem ginger here, no shortage of root ginger though. Would much appreciate your info on the subject.
Hi all 'stem ginger lovers'. Thanks for the feedback. I'll try to find the Dalton's version here. In the meantime, I'll try the product I've used, after doing a Yahoo search; I'm using the 1st recipe posted there from kirene45. I'll let you know how it works out. However, we love ginger cake, so a little bit too much ginger won't be a problem for us. By the way, the ginger cake that is served at Betty's (in York, Harrogate, etc.) is outstanding!! Cheers all!
