I'm all set to make a Christmas Cake this week end (just call me organised!), but I'm not sure how often you have to "feed it" with brandy when it's being stored between now and xmas. Can anyone help?

I work on 1-2 tbsp every couple of weeks - & 1 for the chef every now and then!

Wow that was quick! Thanks Lainey.

One other thing I forgot to ask - Delia's recipe says you have to feed it both sides after you bake it. Do you have to do this regularly, or just feed one side?

i tend to just feed one side...put little holers in the top (a cocktail stick is whats needed here) then spoon the brandy in as Lainey says....xxx

Anything you do is better than nothing! Your cake will be lovely anyway, but if you feed it, it will be even better. I usually feed mine just on the one side, as it is easier but you could turn it over and feed it on both sides alternately.

Do you have to take them for a walk?

Having never made a Christmas Cake (don't cook things I don't eat) it sounds quite funny.

I think my mum feeds hers every week, just on the top via fine skewer holes

I just skewer one side & put the brandy on. Course I am heavy handed with christams cheer and it goes running down the cake so I suppose I do both sides by accident!!

Do you have to re-stab it with the cocktail sticks each time you feed it? I wondered as the cake absorbed the booze and swelled a little, if they don't close up.

I must admit I always restab it to make sure that nothing has closed up.

Just a warning..... I was just a bit, OK, quite a lot, too heavy handed one year with the feeding and the cake was incredibly wet. However, it stuck well to the cake board and everyone admired the lovely moist texture. Now, I always check the bottom of the cake before re-feeding.

C'mon TDS make a cake. I don't eat dried fruit but love making Christmas Cake and Mincemeat. OH makes the puddings.
